TRANSITIONING YOUR WARDROBE FROM SUMMER TO WINTER

by Farirai Macheka

It’s no secret that Hollywood A-listers will break the bank, just to look vibey and youthful. Even horror stories of botched treatments do nothing to deter them. You might even have that friend who progressively looks younger as the years roll by. We could all do with that sort after fountain of youth. We may have the next best thing for you - a round-up of amazing age-defying self-care tips. Are you ready to turn back the hands of time without plastic surgery or a cosmetic procedure? Take note ladies...

Some of us take on an entirely new definition of Sleeping Beauty! After a long day at work the one thing you just want to do is kick off your shoes, and slump into bed. Half the time, removing make-up is the last thing on your mind. you definitely need to think through your night beauty routine as make-up may clog your skin, and your complexion over time starts getting dull. Before you know it, you may start to notice fine lines developing and breakouts.

We can never over emphasise this, to prevent premature ageing, ensure that you wash off the make-up with a warm cloth or a cleanser before you go to bed. Don’t forget your neck as it is typically the first part to show signs of ageing.

Do you exfoliate, cleanse, scrub and moisturise? Kudos for an amazing skin care routine. That being said, why is that acne still recurring? As it would turn out, your pillow cases may be waging war against your skincare routine. Probably second to our undergarments, pillowcases rank high amongst items that are not washed regularly. As such, most pillowcases host dead skin cells, drool and bacteria (we’ll leave the real horrors to your imagination) which affect your skin. Change your pillowcases every day. If a daily routine is impossible, at least try twice or once a week. Invest in a lot of pillowcases so that you have plenty of them in rotation.

It's important to sleep for 7-8 hours. Sleep deprivation causes dark circles and wrinkles under and around the eyes respectively. The beauty of having a consistent sleeping routine is that it affords your body the opportunity to rejuvenate and repair itself. Stress and weight gain can be the unfortunate rewards for not getting adequate sleep. You only have one body so take care of it. Don`t go to bed when you feel like it, but rather come up with a schedule and create a habit of going to sleep at the same time for eight (8) hours.

Bloodshot eyes, acne or eye wrinkles? Spotted any of these in the mirror recently? Life`s challenges can take a toll on you and you can't be superwoman in everything. Stress and anxiety can cause maximum damage to your body and face. Take time out, from life and the daily demands that come with it- and focus on you. Look for a hobby that can boost your mood and relieve you of stress. The main thing is about finding a new activity that you love and enjoy. Try yoga, jogging, reading books, baking, playing golf, painting, biking etc. Avoid overeating, drinking alcohol excessively as these unhealthy choices can cause more harm than good.

We hate to break it to you, someone has to, and we are willing to be the white elephant in this room. Taking those tequila shots and downing beer mugs can be your greatest undoing. Sipping on the liquor a lot will cause great damage to your skin which is your trump card for ‘eternal youth’. While the sober life or cold turkey may not be for everyone, you do slow the ageing process by having one or two drinks as opposed to an all-out binge.

The cherry on top is to include a good diet, and exercising. Practising these habits in your life can delay the signs of ageing and keep you looking fresh and beautiful. Cheers to these great age defying habits!!
